ANDREW KOVACS
I completed year 12 in 2006.
I grew up in Porepunkah.
While at Bright P-12 I was interested heavily in sports including cross country and alpine skiing, swimming and running.
What studies or careers have you pursued since leaving Bright P-12?
I studied Environmental Engineering and Arts [German] at Melbourne University.
Following university, I got job working for CPB Contractors which is an infrastructure construction company. My role as an Environmental Engineer is to minimise environmental impact while we construct the project and to also incorporate improved sustainability outcomes. This might involve using renewable energy, recycled materials or efficient design.
What are your interests outside of work?
I try to keep active most days and enjoy trying new sports. Whether it's rowing, running, swimming or gymnastics the variety keeps it interesting.
I've always enjoyed playing music but find it hard to fit in.
What did you love about growing up in Bright?
Bright is a beautiful place, you don't fully appreciate it until you leave. There's a reason people migrate there in their few weeks of holiday a year. The area has such a range of activities and an extraordinary lifestyle. It's not often you could go for a ride, swim or run in a picturesque area after school or work.
What is your favourite book?
Not sure about favourite but at the moment I'm finishing the Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson, recommend it. Otherwise I used to read a lot of autobiographies through uni.
Finally I'd encourage students at Bright to make the most of your opportunities presented. Whether it's drama, music, sport, language or science get involved, do the extracurricular activities as you never know where they'll take you and how bizarrely they pay off.
